LOOK: TESDA reaches out to the Dumagats of San Jose Del Monte
As part of TESDA’s Abot Lahat program and the Provincial Poverty Reduction, Livelihood and Employment Cluster (PRLEC) being led by TESDA-Bulacan, the Provincial Training Center-Calumpit, in cooperation with the City Government of San Jose Del Monte launched a training program for the Dumagats of Sitio Karahumi in Barangay San Isidro.
At least 20 Dumagats were trained in basic sewing entitled Draft and Cut Pattern for Casual Apparel leading to Dressmaking NC II from June 14-July 5. Sitio Karahumi, a remote and depressed area situated near the boundary of Bulacan and Rizal province has been purportedly declared as an ancestral domain.
The Dumagats learned how to sew and produce face masks, pillow cases, bed sheets, curtains and other household essentials; products that could potentially earn them income thru home-based livelihood pursuits.
After their sewing course, the graduates were then trained by Ms. Laura Opiana on how to produce dishwashing liquid, another household essential that could further help the Dumagats as they attempt to establish sustainable livelihood activities in their community.
The three-week training program, which is also part of PTC-Calumpit’s gender and development program, was made possible thru the help of the City Government of San Jose Del Monte, thru the supervision of PESO Manager by Perfecto Tagalog. The 10 units sewing machines utilized were donated by Congresswoman Rida Robes of the Lone District of San Jose Del Monte to the Dumagats.
Sitio Chieftain Leonardo dela Cruz, and Mr. Benjamin San Jose, Indigenous People Mandatory Representative (IPMR) of the National Commission on Indigenous People were also on hand to support the program.
